Weekend Review: Cup and League Games

Luck Against Coastal

Coastal Spirit's hopes of reaching their first-ever Chatham Cup Final ended in heavy rain on Sunday afternoon when going down to Wellington Olympic 5 – 1. Coastal started strongly and took the lead when Alex Steinwascher finished well in the 13th minute. Hamish Watson then levelled five minutes later. Coastal continued to take the game to the National League champions. The game turned in the 35th minute when the Coastal keeper, Ellis Hare-Reid and teammate Satsumi Hirano, clashed heavily when attempting to clear the ball. Hare-Reid was prone on the ground for a long time before being assisted from the field with a gash to the head and midfielder Hirano resumed his position he was replaced at half time, with both players going to the hospital for treatment. With no reserve keeper on the bench, striker Ryan Stanley was subbed on to go in goal, with Stanley stopping everything that was hit him before the break. Coastal had a great chance to take the lead just before the break but Olympic keeper, Scott Basalaj saved a shot from Kenshin Hayashi at point-blank range. Jack-Henry Sinclair put Olympic into the lead early in the second half with Isa Prins finishing well to increase the lead minutes after being subbed on. Into the final ten minutes, Watson and Prins both scored again in the space of three minutes to move Olympic into the Cup Final where they will meet Auckland City who needed extra time to overcome Birkenhead United 4 – 2.

Technical Remain Four Points Clear In Southern League

Cashmere Technical remain four points clear in the Southern League, with two rounds to play after they were untroubled to account for Nomads 6 – 0, with Christchurch United overrunning Selwyn 9 – 0. Nelson Suburbs move clear of Ferrymead Bays when coming from behind to win 3 – 2 with Dunedin City Royals making two wins in a row when edging Universities of Canterbury (UC) 2 – 1 in their catchup game from Round 14. Coastal Spirit game away to the Royals was deferred due to the Chatham Cup, with the game between UC and FC Twenty11 being played on Wednesday evening.

Technical sit on top of the table with 43, United 39 and Coastal on 36, in the battle for a top-two finish and a spot in the Championship Phase of the National League. Suburbs now have 28, three clear of Bays with Nomads on 21 and Royals on 19. In the battle at the bottom, Selwyn has 8, UC 7 and FC on 0.

The league's leading scorer, Garbhan Coughlan was in a class of his own when scoring the opening five goals for Cashmere Technical against Nomads before being subbed off, with his replacement Garbriel Gallaway scoring the final score. Coughlan showed all his scoring skills, slotting home his first from the penalty spot, finishing off a flowing move to head home the second. In added time from a Matt Tod-Smith free-kick Coughlan peeled away from his marker and cleverly lifted the ball over Nomads keeper, Regan Frame to complete his fifth hat trick of the season. Just after the break Nomads turned the ball over near their own goal and Aidan Barbour-Ryan delivered to Coughlan to volley home in spectacular fashion. His fifth and 23rd goal of the season was another penalty after Yuya Taguchi was brought down in the box. While Nomads created several good chances during the game they were unable to make any of them count.

Christchurch United ensured their goal difference was better than Coastal’s when they inflicted Selwyn’s heaviest-ever defeat in the league, in what was Stallion’s captain, Jack Allatt’s 200th game for the club. There was no hint of a blowout score when United were only three goals better at the break, with Matthew Brazier, a brace and David Yoo the scorers. Riley Grover added the fourth just after place resumed with Joel Stevens adding the next three goals, including a penalty, with the United captain now second in the Golden Boot race on 18 goals. In the final few minutes, Daniel Myen added the eighth goal before Brazier completed his hat trick in added time. On Tuesday evening, United met Technical in the remaining semi-final of the Morrison Mitsubishi English Cup, with the winner facing Coastal in the Final.

Ferrymead Bays skipped out to a two-goal lead over Nelson Suburbs when Joaquin Julve and Cameron Rean scored in the 10th and 11th minutes respectively before Sebastian Hickman scored midway into the half to bring Suburbs back into the game. Trevin Myers then levelled from the penalty spot with twenty to play and then scored the winner in the final ten minutes to claim the win and become Suburb's leading scorer for the season on 13.

The Dunedin City Royals made it two wins on the road in as many weeks when overcoming UC. Oban Hawkins ensured the Royals went to the break in front after finding the back of the net in the 44th minute with a volley by the edge of the goal area after UC could not clear their line. Early in the second half UC levelled when Pero Forman headed home from a corner. With five minutes to play substitute, Joshua McCarroll picked out Nicolas Zambrano, who cleverly headed the ball home to claim the win.

UC back up against FC Twenty 11 midweek with FC needing the win if they have any hope of climbing off the foot of the table.
