Weekend Review: No Cup Upsets

No Upsets In Chatham Cup

There were no upsets in Round 1 of the Chatham Cup, with extra time needed in one of the local ties.

Christchurch United, the current cup holders, may have been pushed harder than expected when getting up over Western 5 - 2, with the Canterbury Premier League (CPL) side battling hard over the entire game on Friday evening. The Southern League (SL) side was only leading 1 - 0 at the break, thanks to Jackson Cole's goal in the 30th minute. Goals to Daniel Meyn and David Yoo looked to put United in control before Western's Daniel Steffert pulled a goal back a minute after being subbed on. Thomas Chao then restored United's three-goal buffer before Steffert scored again. Yoo completed the scoring in the final minute from the penalty spot.

Cashmere Technical also struggled to score in the early stages against CPL side Burwood before winning 11 - 0. Burwood's cause was not helped when a double yellow card to Chris Braithwaite, saw Burwood reduced to 10 after just ten minutes, the first card leading to a penalty which Burwood keeper, Scott Duggan saved. Gabriel Gallaway finally put Technical ahead midway into the half before four goals in the final eight minutes before the break turned the game. The goals keep coming after the break with Lachie McIsaac finishing with four goals, including a penalty, with Yuya Taguchi and Aiden Barbour-Ryan both claiming a double with Lyle Matthysen and Alex Ballard also adding their names to the scoresheet.

Nomads accounted for CPL side Halswell 4 - 0. An early penalty by Caleb Cottom was quickly followed by a strike by Caleb Goldsmith that saw Nomads 2 up after just 5 minutes. A second goal from Goldsmith in the 26th minute extended the lead. After the break, Cottom completed his brace to see Nomads advance into the next round for the first time in four seasons.

In a tight opening half in the all-SL clash between Selwyn and Ferrymead Bays, the deadlock was finally broken when Chris Murphy put Bays ahead in the 33rd minute. Nikolas Fairley, a former Stallion, then doubled the margin just before the break. Early in the second half, Rhys Williams made it 3 - 0, but unlike in their league encounter last week, Selwyn had no late comeback.

In the closest game, SL side Universities of Canterbury edged CPL side, Waimak 1 - 0, with extra time needed to decide the tie. Both teams had chances to break the deadlock on normal time but some excellent goalkeeping by both Brad Eiffe (Waimak) and Matt Leblanc (UC) forced the game into extra time. Jacob Killick scored to put the students ahead in the 94th minute the Waimak then thought they had levelled in the final minute of extra added time only for the 'goal' to be ruled out for handball.

The final game was played on Sunday with Coastal Spirit coming out on top of fellow SL side FC Twenty 11 3 - 0. Ryan Stanley put Coastal ahead before Alex Steinwascher doubled the lead before the break. Kenshin Hayashi then secured the win for Coastal when adding the final goal.

Up in Nelson, Nelson Suburbs defeated Richmond 5 - 0 with FC Nelson getting up over Tuhuna 3 - 2 after extra time. All the winners will go into the Round 2 draw with games to be played over Kings Birthday Weekend, 31 May - 3 June.

Cashmere Technical, Coastal Spirit and NW United all claimed a place in Round 2 of the Kate Sheppard Cup when winning their respective ties over the weekend, with all the ties a repeat of fixtures in the South Island Qualifying League a week earlier.

On Friday evening Cashmere Technical overcame Selwyn 5 - 0. Aimee Phillips scored in the opening minutes before Margi Dias double lead. Into the second half Anna McPhie and Darsha Keogan scored in the space of two minutes to double the lead with Lara Wall then completing the scoring with 20 to play.

After drawing their league encounter against Universities of Canterbury, Coastal Spirit's Saskia Pelham scored the opening goal after five minutes. Lauren Dabner then doubled. Both Pelham and Dabner scored again in the space of two minutes to make it four - nil at the break without any additional scoring after the break.

In a reverse of the league result last weekend NW United edged Halswell 2 - 1. Halswell opened the scoring when Ella Hartel found the back of the net after 14 minutes with Jasmine Barrett then levelling on the half-hour mark. With the end looking to be heading into extra time, NW sub, Abby Taylor scored the winning goal deep into added time.
