Cup Ties Go To Form
The form book saw held up in the four Mainland Football Chatham Cup ties, with the odd bit of drama thrown in. On Friday evening, Ferrymead Bays came from behind with two late, the second deep in added time to knock-out FC Twenty11 2 - 1, while Nelson Suburbs over ran Motueka 9 - 0. On Saturday, Cashmere Technical overcame a determined 10-man Coastal Spirit 4 - 2, with Universities making Christchurch United work hard for their 3 - 1 win on Monday.
FC went ahead when Alban Foissy scored from the penalty spot in the 28th minute after a player had been clipped down in the box. Both sides had chances to add to the scoreline before the break. FC had early chances after the break with Bays keeper, Coey Turipa, making several good saves. Daniel Thoms, back from injury for Bays was subbed on in the 57th minute and went close when hitting the side netting soon after. FC were doing their best to run the clock down but Bays were back on level terms when Thoms headed home from a freekick with five to play. In the seventh minute of added time Bays claimed the win via a second strike from Thoms. FC players pleaded for offside without any joy before the final whistle was blown just after the restart.
Suburbs made all the early running against Motueka with Connor Gillespie scoring in the opening minute and completed a hat-trick after 12 minutes and added a fourth in the 21st before Motueka then conceded another goal before the break. Alex Ward increased the led early in the second half with Gillespie then completed a 2nd half hat-trick in the final fifteen minutes of play.
Technical opened the scoring when Garbhan Coughlan set up Aidan Barbour-Ryan to opening the scoring in the opening minutes. Coughlan then finished well to double the lead in the 21st minute. Tristan Nicol received two yellows in the space of four minutes to reduce Coastal to ten men in the 38th minute. Coastal created several good chances before Jack Mitchell pulled a goal back just before the break. Coastal came our strong after the break and were back on level terms when Omar Cameron fired home a rebound after a shot had been cleared off the line. Coastal's joy was short lived when a cross from Coughlan found Andrew Storer unmarked and then not shut down to restore Tech's lead a minute later. Technical finished the stronger and after Coastal keeper, Ellis Hare-Reid was called on to make several stops, Coughlan added a 4th in added time.
Universities held United out for the opening 44 minutes before Eoghan Stokes broke the stalemate. United then doubled the led when their captain, Matt Tod-Smith scored from the penalty spot. The battling Universities side were rewarded when substitute, Jacob Brooks scored with nine to play with Jago Godden then giving United some breathing space when scoring with three minutes to play.
The form book was torn up in the four Southern Football ties, with Wanaka causing the 'Cupset' when knocking out the Dunedin City Royals 1 - 0, Mosgiel - who are unbeaten in the Southern Premier League (SPL) - exited the cup when going down to Otago Universities who are 7th in the SPL 4 - 0. Green Island took out a tight encounter 1 - 0 against Queens Park. Roslyn Wakari knocked out Invercargill's Thistle, 5 - 0.
Both Wanaka and the Royals wasted clear chances early on in what was a free-owing game and just when it looked like the sides would go to the break scoreless, Dakota Brady fired in a shot from the edge of the goal area with keeper, Alex Boomer, getting a hand to the ball but could not prevent it from crossing the line. Wanaka keeper, Josh Shackleton, was called on to make several telling saves to keep the Royals scoreless. The win sees Wanaka have reach the final 32 stage in the cup for the second time.
Otago Universities made the most of their scoring chances in the opening half with Ben Thompson scoring in the 4th minute. Liam Reynolds and Jacob Quinn then scored within the space of two minutes on the half hour mark with Jack Julian then adding the fourth just before the break.
Roslyn were also on target against Thistle. Sam Cosgrove and Nick Tredwell both scored just before the break. Three goals in an eight minutes spell, starting in the 71st minutes ended any hopes Thistle may have had, with goals going to Josh Lucas, Nathan Wilkie and Dominic Madden.
Goals were a little harder to come by in the other game in Invercargill, between Queens Park and Green Island, in what was a very tight affair. The tie was decided just before the break when Stefan Milidrag scored.
The draw for Round 3, which will be played over the weekend of 16 - 18 June will be conducted by New Zealand Football midweek.
