
There were no upsets in the opening round of the Morrison Mitsubishi English Cup, played on Easter Monday.
Current holders of the historic trophy Cashmere Technical were untroubled to defeat Western 9 - 1. With Lyle Matthysen and Garbhan Coughlan leading the way, each scoring a brace before Yusaf Van Dam, Declan Tyndall, Andrew Storer, Sam Lapslie, and Kian Donkers scored. Avery Addei scored for Western to make it 6 - 1 at the break.
Selwyn edged Burwood 3- 2. Aiden Barbour-Ryan gave the Stallions an early lead before Darius Van Wyk doubled the lead after ten minutes. Jamie Carrodus extended the lead just after the break when Burwood reduced the lead with goals from Tyler Legge and Nathan McNicol but could not add a third to put the game into a penalty shootout after McNicol scored in the 80th minute.
Southern League side Nomads proved to be too strong for Parklands when winning 5 - 0. Nomads lead 2 - 0 at the break before coming on to run away with the game after the break. Captain Calum Cottom scored twice before Oakley Maguire, Jonathan Romero, and Daniel Thoms added their names to the scoresheet.
In the Canterbury Premier League matchups, Halswell advanced over Universities 3 - 1, with Waimak knocked out by FC Twenty11 4 - 1. After a scoreless opening half, Lewis Brook opened the scoring for Halswell. Patrick Cameron added a second two minutes later before Jacob Brooks reduced the margin. Chris Whiteside ensured the win when adding Halswell's third goal. A goal from Luke Aldridge gave FC the halftime lead but conceded an own goal with just under 20 minutes to play. Conor Clarke then scored from the penalty spot to put FC ahead before a double late in the game from substitute Reza Ahmadi saw FC safely into the quarter-final round.
Christchurch United, Coastal Spirit and Ferrymead Bays received a bye into the next round.

Christchurch United Advance In Reta Fitzpatrick Cup
Christchurch United CWCL made a welcome return to the Morrison Mitsubishi Reta Fitzpatrick Cup when they defeated the Universities CWCL side 1 - 0 on Thursday evening. In what turned out to be an even encounter, it was a goal for the experienced Monique Barker after 33 minutes that decided the tie. The two other games in the opening round, FC Twentyy11 versus Halswell and the Coastal Spirit SAS CWCL versus Ferrymead, have to be played yet.
The four Women's Premier League sides (Cashmere Technical, Coastal Spirit SAS, Nomads and Universities), and Selwyn draw byes for the Quarter Final round.
