Waimakariri claim first Reta Fitzpatrick title

Waimakariri took out the Blackwell's Holden Reta Fitzpatrick Cup for the first time defeating Universities 5 – 0 at English Park. The final capped off a highly successful Female Football Festival Day on Saturday.

Waimak made the ideal start when Jayda Stewart scored in the opening minutes and the striker doubled her sides advantage just before the break, using her pace to good effect.

On the hour mark Stewart completed her hat-trick with a good finish to put Waimak three up and with 12 minutes to play Rebecca Gillett combined with Macey Fraser to make it 4 – 0. Stewart bagged her fourth goal late in the game to cap off a dominant display from Waimak.

Universities played their part in the final always looking to push forward when they had the ball but clearly missed the speed of top striker Holly Pascoe who returned to her US college during the week.

Universities fans never gave up with plenty of vocal support for their side, many dressed in vintage Universities playing strips which added plenty of noise and colour to a healthy crowd.
