Knock Out Cup Action - Former Cup Holders Advance and Technical Edge Waimak in Kate Sheepard

Former Cup Holders Advance

Previous holders - Cashmere Technical and Western - of the ISPS Handa Chatham Cup  advanced into the final 64 of this year’s trophy chase.

Cashmere Technical came out on top of Nomads 5 - 3 with Western defeating Halswell 5 - 1. In other ties from the Mainland Federation, Ferrymead Bays accounted for Universities 3 -0, Coastal Spirit were untroubled when defeating Waimakariri 5 - 0, Selwyn won over Parklands by the same score line, with FC Twenty11 edging Burwood 2 - 0. Up north, Nelson Suburbs overrun FC Nelson 7 - 0 but things were closer in Blenheim with Rangers knocking out Tahuna 1 - 0.

The game between Mainland Premier League (MPL) sides, Technical and Nomads, was an exciting affair with two goals in the closing quarter seeing the two-time cup holders safely home. Nomads made a horror start when kicking off, losing the ball which allowed Max Chretien to score the first of his three after just 8 seconds.

A penalty to Stephan Hoyle locked the scores up with Chretien again scoring within seconds of the restart. Mason Stearn put Nomads back on level terms after 26 minutes with Chretien completing his hat-trick in the 41st minute before Byron Heath put Nomads back on level terms when scoring against his former club in added time.

The chances continued after the break with both keepers ensuring there was no additional to the scoreboard until late in the game when Lyle Matthysen finished off a good Technical build up and George King wrapped up the game, adding the fifth goal for Technical in the 89th minute.

Four-time cup holders, Western come out on top of the clash fellow Canterbury Championship League (CCL) side, Halswell United. Western made a solid start with goals to Jack Fleming and Jordan Townsley before Eddie Wilkinson pulled a goal back for Halswell in the 34th minute. Alex Pax restored Western’s two-goal advantage after the break with further goals late in the game to Townsley and Brennan Pitts with Hawks cause not helped when Qiays Longman received a straight red card.

Coastal Spirit took an early lead through Anthony Jones, with Zac Gordon adding a second before the break against Waimakariri’s CCL side. Defender Dominic McGarr continued his scoring touch when adding a third before Haris Zeb and Jacob Richards completed the scoring for Coastal.

Ferrymead Bays took the lead in the opening ten minutes via Chris Murphy in the other all MPL clash. Nikolai Moijn doubled the lead after the break with Seth Clark completing the scoring late in the game.

Selwyn were untroubled when overcoming their opposition from the division below. Joe Arnott opened the scoring with Dan Ede ensuring the Stallions went to the break 2 up. Tom Stewart added the third and with Parklands pushing forward looking for a goal, Selwyn looked dangerous on the counter with Arnott bagging a double before Hamiora Davey-Brown added the final goal.

There was a hint of an upset when MPL side FC Twenty11 were held scoreless by Burwood from the CCL in the first half, but order was restored when Taylor Catlow scored early in second half to give FC the lead which was quickly followed by the second goal from Callum Smith.

Nelson Suburbs run amuck in the second half against FC Nelson from Nelson’s Division 1 League. Ryan Stewart scored the open goal of the first half before adding two more before the 70th minute was up. Eric Ridsdale and Davi Maciel then scored in quick succession before Ridsdale completed a brace and Stewart added his fourth in the final minutes of play.

It was a tighter affair between Rangers and Tuhuna also both from the Nelson Div 1, with Liam Sluiter scoring what turned out to be the winning goal after 25 minutes to advance Rangers into the final 64 clubs remaining in the cup.

The draw for Round 3 will be conducted by New Zealand Football on Tuesday afternoon with games being played over Queens Birthday weekend.

Technical Edge Waimak

Cashmere Technical moved into the next round of the NZ Football Foundation Kate Sheppard Cup after edging Waimakariri 2 - 1.

In a tight opening half where Waimakariri possibly had the better of the scoring chances, they found themselves going to the break a goal down after a Monique Barker left foot chip found the back of the net late in the first half. Early in the second half, Waimak drew level when Katie Elstob got on the end of a fine cross from Ella Fong and despite the protests of off-side from Tech, the goal stood.

Chances went begging at both ends throughout the remainder of the second half, the best to Waimak’s Ella Fong, who got to a through ball before the sweeping Blair Currie, but the Tech keepers presence was enough to force a heavy touch from Fong which was cleaned up by the retreating Annie Gilchrist.

Late in the game, as extra-time was approaching, Emma Kench was taken down just outside the box. From the resulting free-kick on the edge of the penalty area, Lee Maoate-Cox lifted the ball over the wall and beyond the reach of keeper, Briar Guyan to secure the win for Cashmere Technical.

Technical will be joined in the next round draw by Coastal Spirit, Halswell United and Universities, who all received byes in the opening round, with the next round ties being played on Queens Birthday Monday.
