No Surprises in Cup Games

No Major Upsets In Round 1 Of Chatham Cup

There were no major upsets in Round 1 of the Chatham Cup in the eight ties around the Mainland Football Region, with games all going to form.

In Friday evening, six-time Cup winners, Christchurch United were too strong for Parklands when winning 9 - 0. Parkland held the leaders of the Southern League to just 3 - 0 at the break with the score blowing out in the final ten minutes when three goal were scored, with Eoghan Stokes and Sam Philip both leading the way with a brace.

Nelson Suburbs where the other big winners went accounting for Blenheim's Central side 10 - 0 with the goals split evenly either side of the break with Lennon Whewell bagging four of the goals and Corey Larsen a double in the final few minutes, one from the penalty spot.

Coastal Spirit found themselves a goal down to neighbours Burwood after just three minutes when Scott Zimmermann scored before the home side rallied to win 5 - 1 after the sides were level at the break at one apiece. Burwood's cause not helped when conceding an own goal to give Coastal a two-goal cushion.

Both teams and match officials gave Ferrymead Bays Chris Murphy a guard of honour to mark his 400th 1st team appearance for Bays, with Bays leaving it late before scoring what turned out to be the winning goal to advance 2 - 1 after Nomads led 1 - 0 at the break. Murphy had a roll in the goal supplying the cross that saw Kenshin Hayashi bundle the ball home with 10 to play.

Southern League side FC Twenty11 defeated Halswell, who top the New World Premiership 2 - 1. Nathan Dix give FC the led at the break with sub, Will Fairley extending  the lead before Issac Williams reduced the margin with 15 to play.

In the final all Southern League match-up, between Cashmere Technical - the last local side to lift the Cup, and Selwyn United. As expected it was a tight contest with Technical moving into the next round 1 - 0 with their captain, Andrew Storer scoring from a corner just before the half time whistle.

It took a late goal from Universities Luke Whitwell to see the students win 3 - 2 over Waimak. Universities scored two goals in the space of four minutes midway into the opening half - to Stu Campbell and Charlie Peacocke - before Luke Fraser reduced the margin before the break. Farhad Hosseiny levelled with 12 to play before Whitwell found the back of the net in the 90th to avoid extra time.

In what may be considered a minor upset it was Moteuka, who are in third place in the Nelson Pine Premiership, edged FC Nelson, who sit just above Motueka on the table, 2 - 1 with all the goals coming in the opening half. James Latimer and Benjamin Kerr scored for the winners with TJ Hanson scoring for FC Nelson.

In the four ties in the Southern Football region, Mosgiel defeated Timaru's Northern Hearts 7 - 0 and Roslyn Wakari edged Northern 2 - 1.
