Technical Canter Into Quarter-Finals Of Chatham Cup Along with The Royals

Chatham Cup holders, Cashmere Technical cantered into the quarter-final stages of the national knock out cup when accounting for Green Island 9 - 0, with the Dunedin City Royals winning the other all Southern League tie 3 – 1 v Nelson Suburbs.

As they can do, Technical made the most of their early chances against Green Island and the game was as good as over after 18 minutes when the cup holders were leading 4 - 0. Lachie McIssac, opened the scoring in the 7th minutes which was quickly followed by a second from Lyle Matthysen before a stunning strike from Garbhan Coughlan, which gave former FC Twenty11 keeper, Christian Firth little chance of saving. Andrew Storer was next on the scorer’s sheet before Jacob Richards added a fifth just before the break. Green Island chances were limited in the opening half with the best coming on the half hour when a cross from the left by Ollie Sims was not taken cleanly by Danny Knight, with Green Island unable to turn the loose ball into the goal. In between a double from Fraser Angus, Green Island then conceded an own goal and with five minutes remaining sub, Sam Lapslie added Tech's final goal.

In the other game, played In true winter conditions, both the Royals and Suburbs tried to get the ball forward whenever they could which saw plenty of chances at both ends with the Royals opening the scoring after 18 minutes then Suburbs could only manage to half clear a cross by Oban Hawkins which fell to Ben Stanley to fire home. Suburbs finished the opening half strongly with both Alex Boomer having to save a shot from Corey Larsen with La Bu Pan also going close. Suburbs continued to take the game to their southern rivals, but the Royals hit them on the counter attack with Hawkins laying the ball on to Stanley to double the lead with 28 to play. Suburbs reply was almost instant pulling a goal back from a corner with sub, Jamie McGookin who had only been on the field for three minutes claim the goal. Both teams then had chances before the Royals made the most of a good advantage call by the ref with sub Will Turner making it a two goal cushion with ten to play.

Both teams came into the game with players missing due to illness, with Technical having to alter their side three times on match day with the Royals only having three subs to call on. Both sides had early chances with Technical taking the lead in the 15th minute when Jonelle Arthur had the last touch on the ball as it was crossed in from the right. Ten minutes later a Royals shot could not be taken cleanly by Tech keeper, Jade Middleditch with the ball falling out to Dias to fire home the rebound. Play continued to flow from end to end without any addition to the scoreline.
