Chatham Cup and Kate Sheppard Cup Preview

Cup Holders Chasing Quarter Final Spot

Current Chatham Cup holders, Cashmere Technical are chasing a spot in the Quarter Final's when they face Green Island at midday on Saturday at Garrick Memorial Park.

This it the first time the two clubs have met in the historic cup, with the clubs sitting at either end of the Southern League table. Tech will be clear favourites to advance in this game but the history of the cup the is littered with the holders being knocked out, and if the wet weather and strong winds arrive it may be a leveling factor for the visitors who will be missing several players due to suspension.

The sides have played once in the league this season with Green Island taking an early lead before Technical levelled shortly after and then going on to score three goals after the break to win 4 - 1. In the cup, the holders received a bye in the opening round before accounting for Nomads 6 - 0, Selwyn 3 -1 and then were tested against Ferrymead Bays in Round 4, needing extra time before winning 2 - 1.

Green Island drew a bye in the first two rounds and then knocked out both Otago University 4 - 0 and then Northern 5 - 1.

In the other all South Island tie, Dunedin City Royals take on Nelson Suburbs at 12:30 on Saturday.

Clubs Met For The First Time In Kate Sheppard Cup

Cashmere Technical and Dunedin City Royals meet for the first time ever when they line up in the NZ Football Foundation Kate Sheppard Cup Quarter Finals at Garrick Memorial Park on Sunday at 1pm, in a game that is sometimes referred to as the 'South Island Final'.

Technical, who will finish in second place in the New World Mainland Women's Premier League are chasing a second semi final appearance after knocking their archrivals, Coastal Spirit SAS out of the cup in the previous round, arguably their best result to date this season. They will have to be at their best again if they are to topple their southern rivals who wrapped up the ODT Football South Premier League last weekend - with two rounds to spare, the first under their new moniker but their tenth straight title when including their former name - Dunedin Technical. The Royals are yet to drop a game this season, with 10 straight wins in the league, scoring a staggering 80 goals, while just conceding one.

Technical needed a big second half in the opening round of the cup, coming from 4 - 2 down against Christchurch United to level at 4 - 4 after 90 minutes, going on to win 7 - 4 in extra time. Nomads were next up, winning 5 - 0 before getting up over Coastal.

The Royals have yet to concede in the cup, winning 7-0 in the opening round against Green Island, then going on to knock out Roslyn 2 - 0 and then Otago Universities. Graeme Smaill, is back coaching the side after a season break and was in charge when Dunedin Technical lifted the cup in 2018, the last time a South Island team won the trophy, with Laura Wall, now at Cashmere Technical one of the scorers when over running cup favourites, Forrest Hill-Milford United 4 - 2.
