Round 2 of the Southern League sees the unusual situation of five teams chasing their first points after the postponement of the opening round game between Coastal Spirit at Nelson Suburbs. Coastal takes on Cashmere Technical at Garrick Memorial Park at 2:45 pm on Saturday. At the same time, Green Island hosts South City Royal at Sunnyvale Park, with both looking to bounce back from their opening-round losses. On Sunday at Midday, first-round winner's Otago University and Selwyn go head-to-head at the Logan Park Turf. At 2 pm in Nelson, Suburbs and Christchurch United will be out to secure their first point(s) when they meet at Saxton Fields.
Current leaders, Technical take on neighbours Coastal with Technical looking to make it two from two after accounting for Green Island in the opening round. Coastal will be under pressure to get a least a point from the game, but Technical won both of their match-ups in the Mainland Premier League (MPL) earlier in the season by two-goal margins.
Both Green Island and the Royals will be out to turn around their first-up losses to get their National League aspiration's back on track. The Royals took out the first of their clashes in the Football South Premiership 3 - 1, with all the goals coming in the second half, but Green Island took out the return fixture 3 - 2 despite having to play the final 20 minutes with only ten men.
University and Selwyn meet for the time ever met on Sunday. Both showed their fighting spirit when scoring late winners to take out their opening-round games against the Royals and Christchurch United, respectively. A win for either side, possibly sees them sit on top of the table.
Both Suburbs and United will be out to open their account when they square off against each other on Sunday. United defeated Suburbs 3 - 1 when they met in the MPL in Christchurch, with Suburbs winning in Nelson by the same scoreline. Suburbs last game saw them inflex Technical's only defeat this season, in the final round of the MPL.
