Christchurch United recruits top Dutch coach for Academy programme

Christchurch United Football Club has appointed experienced Dutch coach Colin Williamson as their new Academy Director.

Williamson is an Uefa A- licensed coach with extensive academy management experience at several professional clubs in the Netherlands, and Christchurch United president Slava Meyn is proud to get the Dutchman on board.

The club this year started its high-performance Academy Programme for Under-13 and Under 14 age-groups at its Christchurch Football Centre base in Yaldhurst, and in 2018 will expand the programme to the Under 15 level. Recent trials for the academy teams drew major interest from players around Canterbury.

“Colin will bring invaluable experience to our club from working in the youth academies at PSV Eindhoven and Roda JC, so we think he can take our academy and our club to the next level,” says club president Meyn.

Williamson worked with some of the best coaches in the Netherlands during his seven years at PSV and at Roda JC when current Wellington Phoenix coach Darije Kalezić was the Roda JC head coach.

The 34-year-old Dutchman with Scottish heritage is excited to start his new role after his five-year work visa was approved last month.

“Christchurch United has great ambitions and you can see what has already been achieved in the past few years, so I am looking forward to help the club achieve those ambitions,” says Williamson, who will be working closely with the club’s Brazilian Technical Director Fernando Lambert in developing the other coaches at the Christchurch United.

Williamson will fly back to the Netherlands at Christmas to pack up his home near Eindhoven and pick up his young family for the big move to Christchurch.  “My wife can’t wait to come over to this beautiful country and has already been busy looking for houses and schools for our kids,” says Williamson.

Club President Slava Meyn says that moving his family to New Zealand shows the long-term commitment Williamson is making to Christchurch United.

“With Colin and Fernando Lambert, who also brought his family to Christchurch, we now have two highly-qualified international coaches committed to our club, who will provide the best coaching available for young players in this country.”
